This course approaches dance history through the lens of contemporary artistic practices, drawing connections between current choreographic approaches and historical dance heritage. Rather than following a linear or canonical trajectory, we will explore how contemporary artists—working within and beyond the traditional boundaries of choreography—engage with, challenge, and expand upon historical concepts of the body, movement, and performance.
We will analyze the work of artists from the expanded field of choreography, with a particular focus on practices from non-European contexts, as well as the work of disabled artists. By studying these diverse perspectives, we will not only examine contemporary choreographic strategies but also investigate their historical resonances, identifying how they dialogue with and redefine past choreographic traditions.
A key focus of the course will be on understanding how dance is written, both in historical contexts and contemporary frameworks. Through readings, discussions, and practical analysis, we will explore significant historical choreographic concepts and evolving perspectives on the body, situating contemporary practices within a broader critical and historical discourse.
